5 Tips for photographing your children this Easter

Easter is a great time for families to get together, relax, and eat WAY too much chocolate!

It is also a great time to update your family photos. Photographing children can be quite tricky, and if your children are anything like mine they don't make it any easier. Almost every time I get my camera out to take photographs of my own children they seem to either disappear or turn the shoot into something totally different to what I had in mind.

There are a few tricks I have learned along the way for capturing beautiful natural smiles from children and getting some great photographs to update your family album. Try these tips over Easter and I would love to see what you get!

1. Relax! Let the kids be kids! If you want to get a group of kids in the shot together make it fun and turn it into a game. You could have an imaginary line on the floor and have them all try to balance on it in a line, or have them all link arms or give a big cuddle. Who can jump the highest? Or just let them explore. By making it fun you will get genuine smiles and some great candid shots. When everyone is relaxed and having fun in front of the camera they are more likely to follow your directions to get the more traditional posed photo... if that's what you still want after seeing how much fun family photographs can be!

2. Find beautiful light. We all have family photographs in our albums where everyone is squinting. Avoid this by not having everyone looking into the sun. Find some beautiful soft light. This will eliminate any harsh shadows and the squinting scrunched up faces! Move to a shaded area such as under a patio or large tree to get lovely flattering light. If you can't do that try to shoot later in the afternoon with the sun behind the children for soft light .

3. Be ready! Have your camera ready and be prepared before getting the children ready. We all know children do not have very long attention spans. If you are still trying to work out your camera setting or exactly where you want the kids to stand you will lose them before you even get a chance to click the shutter.

4. Get in close! Beautiful close up shots capture all the details. Our children grow and change so quickly it is great to capture some of those details to freeze in time.

5. Join in. When was the last time you were in a photograph with your children? Mums, we are all guilty of it! We are quick to get behind the camera but when it comes to jumping in the photographs we all have an excuse. "oh no, just the kids", "I have put on too much weight", I hate how I look in photographs". Guess what? Your children love you and they love how you look, right now. And they want to look back at family photographs that include you. This Easter make an effort to exist in the family photographs. Pass the camera to someone else for a while, exist in your own photographs. I am going to make more of an effort this long weekend to exist in photographs for my family too!

I hope you have a wonderful safe and relaxing Easter with your loved ones and I would love you to share some of your own photos.

Although we are closed over the long weekend we will be back on Tuesday to reply to any messages or emails.
